Car air conditioning repair & regas

Air con that’s stopped getting cold, or that smells off the moment you switch it on, is almost always fixable — usually a refrigerant leak, a failed component, or a system overdue for a service.

Signs you need this

  • Blowing warm or barely cool air
  • Musty or damp smell when the air con switches on
  • Air con compressor makes an unusual noise when engaged
  • Cooling has gradually gotten weaker over months
  • Air con worked last summer, hasn’t been used since, now won’t cool

What we do

We start with a system pressure check to see whether refrigerant has been lost and where, then use a leak detector to find the actual source rather than just topping the system back up (which only masks the problem temporarily). A full regas evacuates the old refrigerant, pulls a vacuum on the system, and recharges it to the correct specification.

What it costs

Cost depends on whether it’s a straightforward regas or there’s a leak or failed component to repair first. We’ll diagnose and estimate before doing any work.

What we work on

Cars · 4WDs and utes · Light trucks

Questions

Why has my air con stopped being cold?
Most commonly a slow refrigerant leak. Air con systems don’t use up refrigerant through normal use — if it’s low, it’s leaked out somewhere.
Is a regas enough, or do I need a repair?
If there’s an active leak, a regas alone will only last until it leaks out again. We’ll find and explain the actual cause.
Why does it smell musty?
Usually bacteria or mould buildup on the evaporator, which sits behind the dash. There are ways to treat this.
How long does a regas take?
A straightforward regas is usually a same-visit job; anything involving a leak repair takes longer to diagnose properly first.
