Ronnie
Ronnie Claassen has been an auto electrician for the better part of forty years — first in South Africa, now here in Warkworth. In that time the job has changed almost completely: a modern vehicle runs a network of onboard computers talking to each other, and a fault that looks electrical can just as easily be a sensor, a corroded connector three metres away, or a software issue upstream. Ronnie specialises in exactly that kind of computer-controlled system — sensors, batteries, alarms, air conditioning, lighting, entertainment systems and engine management.
Ask him why he still finds an intermittent fault interesting after four decades of them, and it comes down to the puzzle: finding the actual cause instead of guessing and swapping parts. His approach to a strange electrical problem hasn’t changed — have a chat before you start tinkering. Vanessa
Vanessa runs the day-to-day alongside Ronnie. She’s usually the first voice you’ll hear on the phone, and often the one who talks through the job with you and sorts out a time to bring the vehicle in.
The workshop
The workshop is set up around the diagnostic side of the job — proper scan tools and testing equipment, and the time taken to actually trace a fault back to its source. Autec also stocks batteries and common auto electrical parts, and offers free battery testing with no appointment needed.
